Sightings Report: June 8, 2018

All sightings from San Francisco Whale Tours vessel Kitty Kat

It was windy as we headed out into the Golden Gate Strait in search of whales, but we quickly found two spouts near Baker Beach. We waited to approach until a large container ship passed by us.

We watched a whale between us and the bridge, which then disappeared for some time.

The other whale seemed to be moving west, so we slowly started moving to follow it. At that moment the first whale popped up 25 yards from our boat.

We floated in the middle with the two whales on either side of us. Eventually they met in the middle, near a large group of pelicans, gulls, cormorants, terns, and murres.

We could see two more spouts in the distance near Point Bonita. We also spotted some harbor porpoises surfing near the bridge.

It was still very windy on the 5pm trip, but the incoming tide had brought a humpback in with it.

We found the spout in the central bay, where it stayed for the majority of the trip. The wind, swell, and tide pushed us east as the whale slowly moved west.

We saw a few harbor porpoises and some sea lions on this trip as well.
