8am:

Before we started the tour we found a black crowned night heron on the docks near Pier 39.

We got underway and headed east around Alcatraz towards the Golden Gate Bridge, spotting several California sea lions on the way.

We continued outside the gate and into Diablo Cove, where we observed the harbor seals.

While at Diablo Cove, we heard a report of a whale east of Alcatraz. We headed back to the area to check it out. When we didn't find a whale, we tried near Yerba Buena Island, underneath the Bay Bridge and back to Pier 39. Vessel Traffic continued to report the whale, but it was nowhere to be seen.

11am:

On our second trip we again headed between Alcatraz and Angel Island out to Diablo Cove to see the harbor seals.

While observing the seals, we noticed a coyote on the hillside above them.

The outgoing tide meant the sea was flat. We headed out to Point Bonita and turned north.

We found the first spouts by the northern shipping lane buoys. It was a single gray intent on traveling north.

After observing the whale for a few minutes, we headed back to port, observing harbor porpoises the whole way in.

2pm:

While we were at the dock a serious fog rolled into the Golden Gate Strait. There was an increase in swell and some showers in the bay. There were lots of harbor porpoises underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.

We followed the same path around Alcatraz and out to Diablo Cove to see harbor seals.

We then headed out to Point Bonita and north as far as Muir Beach, but with the decrease in visibility we were unable to spot any whales.
