Sightings Report: September 11, 2017

All sightings from San Francisco Whale Tours vessel Kitty Kat

2pm:

On this trip we found humpback whales by the shipping lane buoys 7/8. The two whales surfaced within 100 yards of us in 28 feet of water.

After our first sighting, the whales started to move northwest. One of them disappeared, and the other reappeared 500 yards ahead of us at an interval of 7-8 minutes, indicating that it was traveling. There was a lot of shipping traffic as well as harbor porpoise activity.

After the whale surfaced 3 times farther and farther from us, we gave up and returned to port.

The weather was hot and the water was glassy. Rain clouds loomed in the east, portending the thunderstorm later that night.

All sightings were reported to Vessel Traffic.

If you were on one of these trips and have photos, send them in to info.whalegirl@gmail.com! I'd love to add them to this post for others to enjoy (with credit to you). Thank you!
